Maersk Plans to Shift 25% of Cargo Using Green Fuels by 2030
|
A.P. Moller-Maersk plans for 25% of its cargo fleet to use green fuels by 2030. Data shows that 19 methanol-fueled ships are on order for delivery by 2025, representing about 296,100 TEU, 7% of its fleet capacity. To reach the company’s 25% target would require securing another 45 ships with 17,000 TEU.

Minister Wilkinson Announces up to $800 Million in Project Funding to Advance Canada’s Clean Fuels Sector
|
Approximately 60 projects have been selected to receive funding under the $1.5-billion Clean Fuels Fund with the total federal investment up to $800 million. These projects represent a first tranche of the highest-ranking applications from last year’s call for proposals and have a total combined value of more than $3.8 billion.

FortisBC, Suncor to Partner on Port Moody Hydrogen Pilot Project
|
FortisBC Energy Inc. says it will partner with Suncor Energy Inc. and Hazer Group Ltd. to build a hydrogen pilot project in Port Moody, B.C. If the pilot project advances to the full commercial stage, it would produce up to 2,500 tonnes of hydrogen per year.

New Wood Waste to Energy Centre
|
British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) has opened a new $1.5 million Wood Waste to Energy Centre (WWEC) at its Burnaby Campus, which uses a biomass boiler to recycle wood waste into clean energy. Yearly, WWEC will use 250 tons of wood cut-offs and sawdust from Carpentry and Joinery programs to heat buildings at the Burnaby Campus and thus save 1% of BCITs total emissions, equivalent to 75 tCO2e GHG. This project was supported with $200,000 from BC Bioenergy Network.

Tidewater Renewables Ltd. Enters into 20-year Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Offtake Agreement with FortisBC
|
Under the new Offtake Agreement, FortisBC expects to purchase up to 525,000 gigajoules of RNG annually from a new RNG facility located in Foothills County near High River, Alberta. This new facility will convert organic waste into enough energy to meet the needs of more than 5,800 residential homes in British Columbia.

New Q&A Sessions on Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR) – Fuel Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) Model Carbon Intensity (CI) Calculations
|
Low Carbon Fuels Division, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) released the schedule of online Q&A Sessions on Clean Fuel Regulations – Fuel LCA Model CI Calculations for Fall 2022.

ECCC will not be walking through the training material (presentations and videos) during these sessions. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to review the training material and follow the steps to perform the CI calculations (complete a CFR Data Workbook and model the pathway in openLCA) pertaining to the examples to be discussed prior to attending the Q&A session. These sessions are reserved for typical fuel production processes and general questions on modelling in openLCA and using the CFR Data Workbook, as well as the different illustrative fuel pathway examples. Questions regarding the CI calculation training materials can be submitted via the link on the final slide of the fuel pathway’s presentation, at least three days prior to the session.

Saskatchewan Renewable Diesel Project Selects Topsoe for Technology
|
Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL), a petroleum products producer in Saskatchewan, has chosen Denmark-based Topsoe as the official technology vendor for their renewable diesel project in Regina. The FCL renewable diesel plant will have a 15,000 barrels per day capacity once operational. The company expects it to be producing renewable diesel by 2027.

B.C. Has a New Offset Protocol
|
The B.C. Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy has posted a new Director-approved offset protocol to the B.C. Offset Program website. The Methane from Organic Waste Offset Protocol (MOWOP) is now available for use by projects that capture and destroy methane from landfills or from the anaerobic digestion of organic waste.

The Implementation of New Low Carbon Fuels Act Delayed
|
The implementation of B.C.’s new Low Carbon Fuels Act will be delayed by one year to January 1, 2024 in order to provide more time for consultations with First Nations as well as stakeholders in the aviation and marine sectors. The government’s intention is to complete consultations and regulatory development in time for the new Regulations to be approved by summer 2023, providing all stakeholders with clarity regarding the changes that would come into force on January 1, 2024.

The Province remains fully committed to fulfilling the CleanBC Roadmap to 2030 commitments regarding low carbon fuels, and in order to do so the Ministry is preparing amendments to the Regulations under the current Greenhouse Gas Reduction (Renewable and Low Carbon Fuel Requirements) Act for consideration this Fall, to take effect January 1, 2023. These amendments will implement a new schedule of carbon intensity reductions to achieve a 30% reduction in the existing fuel pools by 2030. The Ministry will also recommend increasing the $200 penalty for non-compliance with the carbon intensity requirements to better align with the current estimated cost of compliance.

Environment and Climate Change Canada Released Official Clean Fuel Regulations in Canada Gazette, Part II. |
The Clean Fuel Regulations will require gasoline and diesel primary suppliers (i.e. producers and importers) to reduce the carbon intensity (CI) of the gasoline and diesel they produce in, and import into, Canada from 2016 CI levels by 3.5 grams of carbon dioxide equivalent per megajoule (gCO2e/MJ) in 2023, increasing to 14 gCO2e/MJ in 2030. Parties that are not primary suppliers would be able to participate in the credit market as voluntary credit creators by completing certain actions (e.g. low-carbon fuel producers and importers).

The Clean Fuel Regulations Have Been Approved and Will Be Published July 6
Low Carbon Fuels Division, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) announces that The Clean Fuel Regulations have been approved by the Governor General and were registered on June 20. The final Clean Fuel Regulations and the Regulatory Impact Analysis Statement will be published in Canada Gazette, Part II on July 6. Registration for primary suppliers, credit creators, foreign suppliers and carbon intensity contributors will be available starting on this date.
ECCC will be offering a suite of training on the regulations, the Fuel LCA Model, the CATS system (the online platform for registration, reporting and credit trading). Contact ECCC at

Qantas and Airbus joint investment to kickstart Australian biofuels industry
The Qantas Group and Airbus will invest up to US$200 million to accelerate the establishment of a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) industry in Australia in a landmark agreement. Due to the lack of a local commercial-scale SAF industry, Australia is currently exporting millions of tonnes of feedstock every year, such as canola and animal tallow to be made into SAF in other countries.

Ban on Russian Wood Pellet Exports to Europe to Cause Difficulties with Waste Disposal at Russian Sawmills
From July 10, Russian wood pellet exports to Europe, the main market for Russian companies, will be completely stopped. According to Lesprom Analytics, in 2021 the European Union accounted for 80% of Russian wood pellet exports, supplies amounted to 1.95 million tons and value amounted to $320 million.

The Purdue Research Foundation recently completed a licensing agreement with an international energy company for the commercialization of a new process for the biological production of hydrogen from food waste. A second licensing agreement with a company in Indiana is under negotiation.

Parkland announced plans to increase renewable fuel production at its Burnaby Refinery. Plans include building on the track record of innovation and leadership, by expanding the company’s existing co-processing volumes to approximately 5,500 barrels per day, and building a stand-alone renewable diesel complex, within the Burnaby Refinery capable of producing approximately 6,500 barrels per day of renewable diesel.
