Conversion of biomass into Biocoal

Project Profile:

Diacarbon Energy Inc. has been active in British Columbia for a number of years and has a pilot torrefaction plant operating in the Fraser Valley.  It has produced biocoal and conducted trial burns of its material at Lafarge Canada Inc. in Richmond, B.C.  Diacarbon has completed a Front End Engineering and Design of a small, commercial 40,000 tonne per year plant.

This project will demonstrate the first commercial scale, next-generation solid biomass-based fuels production – a torrefaction plant in B.C. using a technology compatible to displace fossil coal for local use and for potential to supply export markets.  Diacarbon has selected a site in Merritt, B.C. at an existing idled wood pellet facility, to install the commercial Thermal Biomass Refinery. Diacarbon has signed a lease for the property with an option to purchase.  Diacarbon has selected state of the art technology from Europe and USA to be installed on its plant site and has taken great care to ensure its equipment is of high quality, efficient and environmentally friendly. Diacarbon is using local contractors and approximately 12 new employees from the Merritt region to complete the development and installation of equipment at its plant site. Once the plant is fully operational it will require a total of 25 employees to operate the facility and will create job opportunities within Merritt. Biocoal will be transported via B-train trucks to Lafarge Canada Inc., who have signed a 5 year off-take agreement.

Results:

This project is at the commissioning stage.  Diacarbon estimates the complete torrefaction line will be operable in the Spring of 2017.
