Biomass-fuelled combined heat and power system
Project Profile:
BC Bioenergy Network supported FortisBC to partner with the City of Quesnel, West Fraser Timber Co., BC Hydro and 22 other stakeholders to complete a feasibility study for a Combined Heat and Power (“CHP”) Project.
The CHP system would recover heat from an existing wood burner at a local West Fraser Timber Co. sawmill. This heat can then be carried through district-wide infrastructure – providing 1.3 megawatts of electricity – which will accommodate 75% of Quesnel’s current residential consumption. A further 5.5 megawatts of waste heat can be piped to further sites for industrial use or rural community hydroponic development.
The project capital costs were originally budgeted at $17 Million but could vary depending on the technology selected.
