Canada Invests $2.5 Million Towards Proposed Biofuel Refinery in Fort Frances

The Government of Canada announced a $2.5 million investment in the Wanagekong-Biiwega’iganan Clean Energy Corporation (WBCEC) to support the Front-End Engineering Design phase of a biofuel refinery project in Fort Frances. This initiative aims to convert local wood waste into low-carbon fuels, including sustainable aviation fuel, renewable diesel, and renewable naphtha. WBCEC, comprising ten First Nation communities from the southern end of Treaty #3, is partnering with Vancouver-based Highbury Energy Inc. on this project. The funding is part of the federal government’s $11 million commitment to clean fuel projects nationwide, promoting a cleaner and more competitive energy future.
