About the BC Bioenergy Sector Awards

2021 was the successful inaugural year of the BC Bioenergy Sector Awards, hosted by BC Bioenergy Network. In 2022 we decided to continue with the second annual BC Bioegery Sector Awards to support the leaders of the sector in B.C. Both ceremonies were hosted virtually and you can access the recordings via the links below. These awards recognize leaders who have made meaningful contributions to advance bioenergy research, policy & sector building, and innovation in British Columbia. Nominations for the 2023 BC Bioenergy Sector Awards will open in September 2023.

Award Criteria:

  1. What was the nominee’s personal contribution?
  2. What was the impact on the bioenergy sector?

Nominations are now closed.

Date of online awards ceremony: October (Bioenergy Day)

FAQ:

Are self-nominations accepted?

No, all nominees need to be nominated by a third party.

Is it possible to nominate someone in more than one category?

No, the questions are the same for each category so the category needs to be clearly defined.

How does judging work?

Judging will be based on the responses on the nomination form, but judges reserve the right to validate and quantify the impact.

Is the awards event virtual or in-person?

The event is held virtually.

When will be winners notified?

Winners are notified in early October and asked to give a short presentation at the online awards ceremony.

BC Bioenergy Sector Awards 2022

On Thursday, October 20th, 2022, BC Bioenergy Network announced three recipients of the 2022 BC Bioenergy Sector Award during the virtual ceremony. This was the second annual celebration of the BC Bioenergy Sector Awards, the awards were presented for outstanding leadership and contribution to the bioeconomy sector in British Columbia.

Congratulations to the winners of the second annual BC Bioenergy Sector Awards 2022:

Researcher Award 2022 – Xiaotao (Tony) Bi, Professor and Director, UBC Clean Energy Research Centre
Changemaker Award 2022 – Robert Pinchuk, Director, Low Carbon Strategy, Parkland
Champion Award 2022 – Dave Schick, Vice President, Western Canada, Innovation and Regulatory Affairs, Canadian Fuels Association

The one-hour virtual event was opened by our very own Scott Stanners (Executive Director at BC Bioenergy Network) and inspired by comments from last year’s winners: Jack Saddler (UBC), Dave Bennett (FortisBC), and Michael Rensing (BC Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation). Paul Austin (Fort Capital Partners and Director of BC Bioenergy Network) presented the awards to the 2022 winners, who each shared an acknowledgment speech on the topic of bioenergy. Petra Srutkova (BC Bioenergy Network) hosted a refreshing Trivia Quiz, and surprise Special Guest Ashley Callister (CICE) delivered an extraordinary bioenergy-themed musical performance.

BC Bioenergy Sector Awards 2021

On the third Wednesday of October (October 20th, 2021), stakeholders across Canada and the US celebrated National Bioenergy Day. At this event, BCBN announced the winners of the Inaugural BC Bioenergy Sector Awards, which recognized bioenergy sector builders; persons whose leadership and contributions have been outstanding.

Congratulations to the winners of the inaugural BC Bioenergy Sector Awards 2021:

Researcher Award 2021 – Professor Jack Saddler, NSERC Industrial Senior Chair, Task Leader, IEA Bioenergy Task 39 and Professor of Wood Science at UBC.
Changemaker Award 2021 – David Bennett, Director, Renewable and Low Carbon Fuels at FortisBC.
Champion Award 2021 – Michael Rensing, Director, Low Carbon Fuels Branch, BC Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation.
The Awards were presented for outstanding leadership and contribution to the bioenergy sector in British Columbia.

In addition to hearing from the winners of the inaugural BC Bioenergy Sector awards, the online event featured comments from Special Guests including: Doug Hooper, Director, Policy and Regulations, at Advanced Biofuels Canada; David Schick, Vice President of Canadian Fuels Association, Western Division, and Don Roberts, Chair of the Board at Arbios Biotech; plus a surprise musical performance from Special Guest Pat Guidera, Director, Forest Technologies at Alberta Innovates Bio.
