Canada is the world’s second-largest country, with a total land area of 8.97 million km², more than twice as large as the European Union. With a population of 41.3 million, Canada has a low population density of 4.6 people per square kilometre. Consequently, Canada has high transportation fuel use per capita, more than double the median per capita use in other IEA Bioenergy member countries. Given that transport accounts for 22% of Canada’s annual GHG emissions, the decarbonization of transport is a high priority for Canada to meet its emission reduction goals.
