IEA Updated Energy Prices Database

The International Energy Agency (IEA) published the annual update of its Energy Prices database, now including 2024 data for most OECD countries and a wide selection of others, covering a total of 148 countries. The database provides weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly data on end-use prices.

Key highlights:

  • The global average price of mid-grade gasoline remained stable at 1.10 USD/litre in 2024, following previous years of growth.
  • Variations in gasoline prices are primarily driven by tax regimes, while electricity price differences are influenced by multiple factors, including fuel costs, operational expenses, transmission and distribution, and regulatory frameworks.
  • In over 40% of countries, the residential electricity price is lower than the gasoline price, with median prices being almost equal.

Starting in January 2025, the IEA discontinued the Beyond 2020 format (IVT files and WDS platform). Data are now available exclusively through the .Stat Data Explorer, which enables Excel and CSV exports.
