Microsoft paused new carbon removal purchasing agreements following a recent deal for 620,000 tonnes of carbon removal from an Indigenous-owned project in Saskatchewan. The decision, described as part of a portfolio review, created uncertainty across the carbon dioxide removal market, where Microsoft accounted for 90% of all durable contracted volume in 2025. With many developers relying on Microsoft as a primary buyer, the pause highlighted the need for more diversified demand as the market adjusted to shifting investment and policy dynamics.
