According to a new report by Ember, Drax power station in the UK once again ranked as the country’s largest single source of CO₂ emissions in 2024, emitting 13.3 million tonnes – a 16% increase from the previous year. Despite operating as a biomass facility, Drax’s emissions surpassed those of the next four highest emitters combined.
With 99% of its 7.6 million tonnes of biomass imported, the report raises ongoing concerns about carbon accounting, sustainability, and the effectiveness of bioenergy subsidies.
