UBC Launches Bioenergy Training for Remote Indigenous Communities

The UBC’s Faculty of Forestry, in collaboration with FPInnovations, introduced the Community Bioenergy Systems Training Program. This initiative aims to assist remote and Indigenous communities in transitioning from diesel-based energy to sustainable, wood-based biomass power. Training sessions are conducted at the Alex Fraser Research Forest in Williams Lake, BC, utilizing a newly established biomass Combined Heat and Power plant. Participants receive hands-on experience in operating bioenergy systems and managing woody debris supply chains. The program is particularly beneficial for communities not connected to the provincial electrical grid, offering tuition-free training, accommodations, and travel subsidies for Indigenous participants.
