BC’s North is the historical forestry centre of the province, home to vast quantities of woody biomass.
In 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016, BCBN partnered with the International Bioenergy Conference & Exhibition Society in Prince George to welcome the world to Canada’s largest bioenergy conference. The biannual conference brings together over 400 investors, suppliers, project developers and policy makers from around the world.
The region is home to much of the bioenergy research, development, manufacturing and engineering work in BC. Initiatives Prince George hosted the development of the Northern Bioenergy Partnership (“NBP”) as an industry-led cluster group to champion Prince George as a bioenergy ‘Centre of Excellence’.
BCBN provided the funds to Initiatives Prince George and a group of stakeholders to prepare a business plan for collaborative development efforts.
BCBN approved an additional $100,000 in further funding over three years to support the implementation of the business plan and development of the Northern Bioenergy Partnership. Industry also committed $50,000 for the first year of operation and the Omineca Beetle Action Coalition had committed $60,000 over 3 years.
While interest remains high, the NBP was unable to attract sufficient additional funding to sustain its Executive Director into 2013 and are now looking at alternative hosting models.
